Linda Ikeji Blog, was taken down Wednesday by tech firm, Google, after a row over the originality of the blog’s contents.

Linda Ikeji Blog, published on Google-owned Blogger, has grown to become one of the most visited websites in Nigeria. The site mainly aggregates and republishes news items and entertainment bits sourced from other channels, although it occasionally publishes exclusive contents.

Its publisher, Linda Ikeji, has emerged one of the most successful online entrepreneurs in Nigeria and has been rated amongst Nigeria’s most influential young women. Lately, the site has been hit by multiple allegations of plagiarism with critics allegedly prodding Google to suspend the blog.

The tech firm disallows plagiarism on its platforms. Ms. Ikeji denies lifting materials without proper attribution. On Tuesday, Ms. Ikeji said the site came under attack by her competitors driven by envy over her success. The claims followed allegations of plagiarism by the publisher of another blog, 15Past8, known by the name Aye Dee. Details of the controversial work are not clear. But on Tuesday, Ms. Ikeji dismissed the allegation in an article, saying she cited sources in all published materials.

Ms. Ikeji said Mr. Dee and other tech-savvy publishers were out to have her website suspended by Google, angered by her success and her recent acquisition of a N24million SUV. Ms. Ikeji did not respond to our inquiries Wednesday.

She however told her readers via her twitter handle @lindaikeji: “Linda Ikeji Blog will be back in a bit…biko bear with me…”. At 9:50 P.M. on Wednesday, she announced that she was trying to get a new site for her blog.

“Oh wow! Thanks guys for all the love and support. I’m overwhelmed. Trying to get a new site…please bear with me. Long live LIB. Kisses,” she tweeted. Google could not be immediately reached also. An official who responded to our call denied knowledge of the suspension of the website.

Over the weekend, Linda Ikeji was accused by a number of people of constantly plagiarizing and lifting articles from websites without giving credit to original sources.

As a result, the blog was shut down yesterday.

The action has since sparked lots of controversies as many of her fans took to the various social media pages to lament and blame ‘witches’ and ‘haters’ for the tragedy.
Clearing the air on the misconception, Google’s Manager for Communications and Public Affairs, Anglo-Phone West Africa, Taiwo Kolade-Ogunlade, in a chat with Punch newspaper, explained why the blog was taken down.

He said Google takes the issue of copyright seriously, adding that the company belongs to a group of Internet firms that abides by the provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and other applicable copyright laws.

“To respect the rights of copyright holders, Google clearly spells out how users of its products and services can get permission to use someone else’s intellectual property such as text, songs, images and footages. Google is no respecter of anybody when it comes to the issues of copyright infringement.

“Google as an organisation takes issues of copyright seriously and belongs to a group of digital companies that respect copyrights.
“Copyright is a big deal and this is why you can’t just go and pick up another person’s intellectual property or content and lay claim to its ownership.

“It is not a case of witch-hunting and has nothing to do with Linda Ikeji’s personality or anyone else because there is a process, and irrespective of who you are in the world, that process would apply to you.

“It has become imperative for online entrepreneurs to respect the rights of copyright holders noting that the Internet community should be built on mutual trust and general respect.

“Let’s respect other people’s rights and intellectual property. Making money off other people’s content without permission is wrong. Although the Internet is inanimate, it is the content on it that gives it life. These are the issues.
“Whenever owners of online contents come after you accusing you of using their content, it is because they have families to feed and businesses to sustain.

“People should also understand that copyrights does not only apply to text, but also extends to literary works, images and photographs, music files and MP3s, movies, movie trailers and videos as well as software”, Kolade-Ogunlade explained.

Google, on Thursday, explained that it does not tolerate the violation of its Terms of Service, which include intellectual property theft, but declined to categorically say that was why it shut down popular Nigerian blog, Linda Ikeji’s Blog.
The company said it does not discuss individual accounts.

The company had on Wednesday removed the blog from its Blogger platform days after an intellectual property activist reported the site for copyright infringement.

The firm said practices such as plagiarism diminish the experience of its users but said it would not discuss individual accounts.
“Google is dedicated to offering users the best possible experience across our products,” said Kola-Ogunlade, the company’s communication and public affairs manager for Anglophone West Africa when contacted over the deletion of the popular blog.

“We take violations of policies very seriously as such activities diminish the experience for our users. When we are notified of the existence of content that may violate our Terms of Service, we act quickly to review it and determine whether it actually violates our policies. If we determine that it does, we remove it immediately.”

Linda Ikeji Blog which was hosted by Blogger, a Google-owned blogging platform, was pulled down Wednesday following allegations of plagiarism and intellectual property theft.

On Tuesday, in a blog post, Ms. Ikeji accused “cybersquatters and hackers” of trying to bring her blog down.
She pointed a finger directly at Mukhtar Dan’Iyan, the Editor-in-Chief of US-based The 15 Past Eight Media Group, who uses the handle @AyeDee on Twitter.
Ms. Ikeji said Mr. Dan’Iyan was equally guilty of what he accused her of -lifting articles from other websites without permission, and alleged that he owned the domain name lindaikeji.net under an alias, Emmanuel Efremov.
In an exclusive interview with PREMIUM TIMES on Thursday, Mr. Dan’Iyan said he had emailed Ms. Ikeji repeatedly about content she lifted from his site before filing a formal DMCA complaint to Google.
A Digital Copyright Millenium Act, DMCA, is an avenue to report content that you would like removed from Google’s services under applicable laws.
According to Mr. Dan’Iyan, Ms. Ikeji had used over 10,000 copyrighted pictures and stories over the past five years without the authorisation of the copyright owners.
He also said “Emmanuel Efremov” was one of the directors in his company.
“Emmanuel has never tried to sell anything to Linda, nor has he ever demanded any sort of money from her. In fact, I doubt he’s ever had any interaction with here even in passing,” Mr. Dan’Iyan said.
Meanwhile Ms. Ikeji is still working on re-launching her site, which by Thursday afternoon was still shut down.
Late Wednesday night, on Twitter, she posted to her over 400,000 followers, “Oh wow! Thanks guys for all the love and support. I’m overwhelmed. Trying to get a new site…please bear with me. Long live LIB. Kisses…”
In a previous tweet following the shutdown, she had informed her followers that the blog was still up on lindaikeji.mobi; apparently, a stop-gap arrangement.

Yay! LIB is back!
Google has restored my blog. About 24 hours after it was deleted. I hear it's a record. Yay! Normally it takes weeks or even months for Google to restore a deleted blog. But we are special here! Lol

The people who took it down knew what to do. You get a number of strikes on blogger and after that it is automatically deleted. It's automated, programmed to work that way. But the human beings got involved, checked out all the filed complaints, saw they were bogus and restored the Linda Ikeji Blog
